Celebrating National Volunteer Month, we extend an abundance of thanks to our committed volunteers who directly support and impact student success. Amplifying Building STEPS lean staff as writing advisors, academic tutors, professional coaches and STEM Seminar and internship hosts, these individuals and corporate groups equip our students for college and career success. Interested in making an impact? Please explore our Volunteer Opportunities or contact Jennifer Descoteau jdescoteau@buildingsteps.org.
THE NETWORK EXPERIENCE
Another successful Network Experience in the books. Over 30 volunteers engaged 1:1 with students to polish and effectively deliver a confident professional introduction. Communication is vital in all parts of life, and our high school seniors will be ahead of the curve when meeting an internship host, college professor, or future job recruiter. One volunteer shared: "It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about students' interests and their career goals and provide feedback to prepare them for interviews and talking to professionals."
STEM EXPOSURE IGNITES INTEREST
STEM exposure inspires students to think about their future and link newfound career interests to a college education. Our 2023/24 STEM Seminar hosts shared careers in healthcare, lab science, pharmaceutical development and manufacturing, cybersecurity, engineering, architecture, marine biology, environmental science, global communications, machine learning and AI. Thank you to Becton Dickinson, Ciena/Blue Planet, DP Solutions, JMT Engineering, LifeBridge Health/Sinai Hospital/Stevenson University Medical Laboratory Science Program, MilliporeSigma, Towson University and Towson University Center for STEM Excellence, University of Maryland Medical Center and United States Naval Academy STEM Center for these extraordinary experiences.
MAKING AN IMPACT: STUDENT PERSPECTIVES
One-to-one volunteer impact is measurable through college acceptances, scholarship awards, and improved grades, along with the more intangible enriched confidence. Benefitting from college and scholarship essay guidance and academic tutoring, our high school and college students appreciate this direct, nuanced support.
